The RYA, who standardize dinghy sailing courses, can help you get a general idea about what these courses are like:
Need some more information? Have a look below.
- What clothes should I wear?
Comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. (Old jogging/tracksuit type clothing can be good for this.)
If you have a wetsuit and it’s not too warm out, that can be a good idea.
Always bring a towel and some spare warm clothes to wear after sailing. - What about shoes?
Old trainers are best – again, they will get wet. If you don’t have any, water shoes are a good alternative when starting out: they offer grip, can deal with water, and are a cost-effective option at outdoor shops. If you’re joining the club and sailing more regularly you may wish to invest in some dinghy boots. - Can I change at the club?
Yes, the clubhouse has changing facilities and showers. - Do I need to buy or bring any special equipment?
We provide you with everything you need for the course: a buoyancy aid, head protection for children and young people, the necessary books from the RYA, and certificates when you complete the course. - Do you provide the boat?
Yes, the course is run on training boats provided by the club. - Do I need to be able to swim?
We only ask that you are confident on the water. We provide buoyancy aids and you will be in sight of land at all times. - Do you provide food?
We provide teas, coffees and squash, and a well-stocked cupboard of snacks. However, learning to sail will have you work up an appetite, so when you’re at the club all day you should bring a packed lunch. A kettle and microwave are available to warm things up. - What can I do once I’ve finished the course?
Completing an RYA Level 1 and Level 2 course (or the equivalent OnBoard courses for young people) will turn you into a confident sailor in good conditions.
We would love to see you join us as a member. We race every Sunday morning, have casual racing on Wednesday evenings from spring until October, and offer cruising opportunities on Sunday afternoons.
Further afield, we have regular joint trips to other sailing venues in the UK. Previous course attendees have used the experience they gained from sailing at our club to sail in Portugal, Canada, the Mediterranean and other places.
