First aiders ready for the season

Preparations for the 2025 sailing season included a specialist first aid course at Syston Sailing Club.

Five club members, plus a guest who sails elsewhere, received the RYA’s first aid qualification. It focused on some of the most likely injuries and illnesses you might expect in a water-based sport.

For some it was a refresher course, for others a new skill. Other club members have work-based first aid qualifications, and yet more are healthcare professionals whose experience would be invaluable in an emergency.

Significant injuries or illnesses are rare at the club, but it is always best to be prepared.

First aid is only one part of our safety regime. We also have dedicated safety power boats on duty for our organised sailing sessions, and for when learners or children are taking to the water. Club rules mean all those using our water must wear buoyance aids, and boats have to maintain the manufacturer’s buoyance requirements.

The first aid qualifications last for three years.
